This past spring, while on vacation in our Nation’s Capital, my wife and I stopped into Sen. McConnell’s office. There in the corner was the 6 foot tall stack of paper tied up in a red bow that is the Affordable Care Act. How could anyone have read the entire bill? Then Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, said “we have to vote on it before we know what’s in it” Three years later, we are STILL finding out what is in it.
By the time you read this Wednesday, the United States Government will have shut down, or the crisis will have been averted. As things have progressed this weekend (I’m writing this on Sunday), I’m betting the United States is closed for business today. However it is not for the lack of trying on the part of the House and Senate Republicans.
In the first column I wrote in the Henry County Local, I wrote: “Politics has always been dysfunctional. But it seems it has ramped up. Instead of coming together for the good of the nation, the commonwealth or the county, a lot of time is spent spewing half-truths, distortions and name calling. The ruling party’s “It’s my way, or the highway,” mentality cuts off debate and does not consider the opposition’s point of view.” ...or the will of the people.
Last week, the Republican lead House of Representatives passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) that would have kept the government open for business, but removed funding for Obamacare. Then the Democrat lead Senate added the Obamacare funding back into the bill and returned it to the House. Late Saturday night the House rewrote their CR that would keep government open for business to December 15th, and postpone implementation of Obamacare for one year. Even if the Senate were to agree to the House’s CR bill, President Obama has vowed to veto it.
The Democrats are already laying blame to the government shut down on Republicans.
A USA TODAY/Pew Poll, taken the first week of September, shows that the majority of Americans have an unfavorable view of Obamacare, 53% to 42% in that same poll 53% disapprove of how President Obama is handling the healthcare policy. The GOP lead House has offered two CR Bills to try to work this out. The Democrat lead Senate shot them down and will not consider anything less than what the President wants. The President himself says he will veto any thing that does not contain Obamacare. So who is to blame for a government shutdown?
This weekend, we discovered the latest oops in the Not-So “Affordable” Care Act (aka Obamacare). The Kaiser Family Foundation has reported that the ACA defines an affordtable healthcare plan as costing 9.5% or less of an employee’s household income. The oops is that they forgot to apply that to the whole family. Meaning that while an average plan for an individual costs around $5600.00 a year, it goes up to around $15,700.00 for a family.
There are too many mistakes like this latest one, in the law known as Obamacare.
The President has taken it upon himself to give exemptions, and delays to the chosen few, which he can not legally do. Its Law. The President, Congress, and their staff, and the Supreme Court are exempt from the law that they have imposed on the rest of us. The ACA’s architect, Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), called Obamacare a "train wreck".
On Face The Nation, this morning, Sen. Rand Paul said “The President is saying no to compromise. That he will not touch Obamacare...but he himself has amended it about 15 times already.”
Now I ask, who is willing to reach across the aisle, trying to find compromise, and who wants to take their ball and go home? The Republicans want to do away with Obamcare, or find common ground to come up with something that actually works.
If you are reading this, Wednesday, and we are in day two of a government shutdown, it is the Democrats you can thank. The blame is squarely on the President and the Democrat leaders.
